The Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) provided training on intelligence-led policing to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) officers. As part of the Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) program, GRSP conducted the workshop on 23rd and 24th April at the Hotel Intercontinental Dhaka.

The workshop was inaugurated by Mr. AKM Hafiz Akhtar BPM-Bar, Additional Commissioner of Police (Admin), Dhaka Metropolitan Police, who graced the event as the chief guest. In his address, he emphasized the importance of such workshops in ensuring road safety in Dhaka. He stated, "It is imperative for the DMP to constantly update and train its officers with the latest techniques and methodologies. I am confident that this workshop will enhance the capabilities of our officers to ensure safer roads for the citizens of Dhaka." The event witnessed the participation of different ranks of police officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

GRSP’s Senior Road Policing Advisor, Mr. Russell Nyman, a former senior UK police officer, conducted the training sessions. Mr. Nyman’s sessions focused on current global road safety trends, the role of police in ensuring a safe system approach for road safety, the road policing deterrence model, and intelligence-led policing, a method of law enforcement that has been adopted by many police forces across the world to reduce road crashes and associated deaths and casualties.

During the workshop, Mr. Russell emphasized, “This training will enhance the police officer’s capacity to analyze data and other information to guide decision-making about deployments of officers to prevent road crashes and associated trauma of road crashes.”

The GRSP training was aimed at equipping police officers with enhanced knowledge, enabling them to recognize the risk factors to enforce traffic laws more effectively and reduce road-related deaths and injuries by incorporating successful international and national road policing strategies.

The event highlighted the critical role of intelligence-led policing in ensuring road safety and reducing fatalities. By implementing the strategies and knowledge gained from this workshop, the DMP aims to significantly contribute to making Dhaka’s roads safer for all.
