Road accidents claim six lives in three districts

Six people have died in separate road accidents in Mymensingh, Tangail and Chattogram districts.

In Mymensingh, a couple died as a bus ran over them while they were crossing the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Bhaluka on Friday (24 May) night.

The deceased were identified as Abbas Ali Dewan, 60, and his wife Hazera Khatun, 50, residents of Kalmegha village in Sakhipur Upazila of Tangail.

According to police, Abbas Ali and his wife came to visit his granddaughter’s.

A bus of Shahjalal Paribahan knocked down the couple when they were crossing the road, leaving them dead on the spot.

Shah Kamal Akanda, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bhaluka Model Police Station, said the highway police recovered the bodies.

Police seized the bus but the driver managed to escape.

In Tangail, two people were killed in a road accident in Pauli area of Kalihati upazila on Saturday morning.

The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. However, police said that the deceased were the driver and helper of the covered van.

Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of Elenga Highway Police Outpost, said a Dhaka-bound covered van crashed into a lorry on the south side of Pauli Bridge on the Dhaka-North Bengal highway.

The front part of the covered van was smashed, leaving the driver and the helper of the covered dead on the spot, he said.

In Chattogram, two people were killed and two others injured in a collision between a bus and a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on the Chattogram-Khagrachhari highway in Hathazari upazila of Chattogram on Saturday noon.

The deceased were identified as Abdul Motaleb Tuku, 70, and Md. Absar,55 of Hathazari upazila.

Nazirhat Highway Police Station Sub-Inspector Anisul Islam said the injured were taken to a hospital.
