Dr. Shahdeen Malik has been removed as the head of the Constitution Reform Commission. Instead, Professor Ali Riaz, a political science professor at the University of Illinois, has been appointed as the head of the commission by the government.
The Cabinet Division issued this order on Wednesday (September 18).
The order states that in his address to the nation on September 11, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced the formation of six commissions as part of state reform and named their heads. Dr. Shahdeen Malik was initially mentioned as the head of the Constitution Reform Commission. His position has now been filled by Ali Riaz.
Ali Riaz is a Distinguished Professor at Illinois State University, a Senior Non-Resident Fellow at the Atlantic Council, and the President of the American Institute of Bangladesh Studies (AIBS). He is associated with various international research institutions, and his research focuses on democracy, violent extremism, religion and politics, South Asia, and Bangladeshi politics.
On September 11, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced the decision to form six commissions to reform various state sectors, including the Election Commission, the Constitution, and others. Dr. Yunus stated that Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar would head the Election System Reform Commission, Sarfraz Chowdhury would lead the Police Administration Reform Commission, Justice Shah Abu Naim Mominur Rahman would head the Judiciary Reform Commission, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman would lead the Anti-Corruption Reform Commission, Abdul Mueed Chowdhury would head the Public Administration Reform Commission, and Dr. Shahdeen Malik was initially appointed to head the Constitution Reform Commission.
However, today’s notification has replaced Dr. Shahdeen Malik with Professor Ali Riaz as the head of the Constitution Reform Commission.
