Summer onion farming has gained momentum in Natore, propelled by the government's initiative to reduce import dependence.

Traditionally, most farmers in the country focus on winter onion cultivation, leading to increased onion prices during the summer season. To address this issue, the Agriculture Department has taken proactive steps to encourage onion cultivation even in the summer months.

Md. Mizanur Rahman Mizan, a farmer from Sarakutia village in Bahampur union, Naldanga upazila of Natore, has achieved success in summer onion cultivation. According to Md. Kiswar Hossain, the Upazila Agriculture Extension Officer and agriculturist, Mizanur Rahman Mizan cultivated Kashmiri variety onions during the summer under the agricultural development project of Rajshahi Division. The yield reached an impressive 85 maunds per bigha, showcasing the potential of summer onion cultivation.

Sharing his experience, farmer Mizanur Rahman mentioned that he cultivated summer Kashmiri onions on 17 decimal land, taking approximately 85-90 days from planting to harvestable. His cultivation expenditure amounted to Tk 17,500.

Mizanur successfully harvested 5 khata of onions, with an average yield of 4/5 maunds per stick. Selling the onions in the market at Tk 2 to Tk 2.5 thousand, he expressed gratitude for the support and regular visits from the Agriculture Office, which played a crucial role in his success.

Fauzia Ferdous, the agriculture officer of the upazila, highlighted Mizanur Rahman's achievement, noting that the onions he cultivated were fetching a maximum of 6-7 per kg in the market. The Agriculture Office continues to provide comprehensive support, including advice and inspections, to ensure the success of farmers like Mizanur Rahman.

Emphasizing the broader significance of summer onion cultivation, Ferdous stated that it aims to meet the year-round demand for onions, ensure fair prices, and reduce dependence on imports. The Agricultural Development Project of Rajshahi Division contributes to this effort by expanding modern technology and providing assistance in the form of seeds, fertilizers, and inter-care. The Agriculture Department remains vigilant in promoting and supporting summer onion cultivation, aiming for a sustainable and self-sufficient onion supply in the country.
