Youth killed in post-election clash at Netrakona

A youth has died after being injured in a post-election clash between the supporters of the defeated candidate and the winning candidate in Netrokona-3 (Kendua-Atpara) constituency.

Nurul Amin, 28, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital this afternoon.

He was the supporter of Independent candidate Iftikar Uddin Talukdar Pintu (Truck) who contested who defeated Awami League-nominated candidate Ashim Kumar Ukil (Boat) in the 12th parliamentary election, held on Sunday (7 January).

Iftikar Uddin got 76,803 votes while Ashim Kumar Ukil got 74,550 votes.

According to locals, supporters of independent truck symbol candidate Iftikhar Uddin Talukder Pintu from the Netrokona-3 (Kendua-Atpara) constituency held a victory procession at the Deogaon area of Atpara upazila on Sunday night upon receiving the election results.

At that time, the supporters of Ashim Kumar Ukil attacked the procession. Pintu's supporter Nurul Amin was seriously injured in the attack.

He was first taken to Atpara Upazila Health Complex. When the condition deteriorated, he was sent to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Later, Nurul Amin was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Nurul Amin died while undergoing treatment at around 4pm on Monday (8 January).

Confirming Atpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Tawhidur Rahman said that no written complaint has been received from the family of the deceased so far.

"Legal action will be taken against the culprits if the complaint is received," he added.
