Benapole Railway Station, situated in the heart of Bangladesh's largest land port, serves as a critical transportation hub for both domestic and international travel. Despite its strategic importance, the station is grappling with a myriad of challenges that are exacerbating the suffering of passengers and hindering its potential.

This article delves into the issues plaguing Benapole Railway Station, highlighting the need for modernization and improved facilities.

Annually, the station generates an income of approximately one and a half to two crore taka through goods and passenger transport. However, the lack of modern facilities and amenities is taking a toll on the passenger experience. The digital age demands modernity, but Benapole Railway Station is plagued by outdated infrastructure and a chronic shortage of manpower. The situation is far from ideal, with little to no improvement in sight.

The history of railway communication between Bangladesh and India is fraught with interruptions. The Indo-Pak war in 1965 led to the temporary suspension of train services, and by 1974, the railway movement was completely halted due to financial losses. However, the people of Benapole and the surrounding regions have persistently called for the reopening of the railway line. The Awami League government responded by introducing passenger trains between Benapole and Khulna via Jashore in 1999, at a cost of Tk 25 crores. This move was a step towards reviving train services and facilitating trade between India and Bangladesh.

The journey of Benapole Railway Station has been marked by significant milestones. Import trade between India and Bangladesh commenced through Benapole in 1999. The launch of the passenger train 'Bandhan Express' between Kolkata and Khulna via Benapole in 2017 was another significant development. The introduction of the 'Benapole Express' in 2019 further underscored the government's commitment to enhancing connectivity and convenience for passengers.

Despite these efforts, the station continues to face numerous challenges. The infrastructure is outdated, with unsafe buildings, a lack of public toilets, and unclean restrooms. The absence of clean drinking water and medical facilities adds to the woes of passengers. The station grounds are often overrun by cows and goats, creating an unhygienic environment.

Women passengers are particularly affected by the lack of decent public toilets and the absence of a first-class waiting room. The situation is further compounded by the absence of a sweeper, leaving the station in a perpetual state of disarray.

The influx of smugglers and drug addicts has also become a major concern. Passengers have reported incidents of harassment and intimidation by smugglers, who often operate with impunity. The railway police, tasked with maintaining security, are accused of colluding with smugglers and extorting money from passengers.

The master of Benapole railway station, Md. Saiduzzaman, acknowledges the challenges and reports that the issues have been brought to the attention of the authorities. However, the pace of improvement remains slow, leaving passengers to grapple with the existing conditions.

In conclusion, Benapole Railway Station, despite its strategic importance, is in dire need of modernization and improved facilities. The government and railway authorities must address the issues promptly to enhance the passenger experience and realize the full potential of this vital transportation link. The station's contribution to the economy and the convenience it offers to travelers underscore the urgency of these reforms.
