Bangladesh Navy on Thursday detained 33 Rohingyas, who were on their way to Malaysia illegally, from Saint Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar.

The Rohingyas were going to Malaysia on a boat with help of some middlemen, said Captain Sohail Azam of the Bangladesh Navy.

The detainees are from different camps of Ukhiya and Teknaf upazila. They gathered at Baharchhara point and got on a boat together, he said.

Later, they were intercepted by patrol ships from St Martin’s Island.

The identities of the Rohingyas could not be known immediately. Of them, 12 were women, 20 men, and one child.

Legal action will be taken in this regard, said the Navy official.
