Protesters stage demo at Chattogram court premises

Protesters gathered in front of Chattogram Court building premises on Wednesday (31 July), demand on immediate release of the arrested persons and justice for the killed during the protest over reforming quota government job.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) backed lawyers helped the protesters to enter the court building premises despite interruptions from the law enforcers, said witnesses.

Meanwhile, Protesters gathered in front of Chattogram district council building premises in the morning but they were interrupted by the police and other law enforcing agencies.

On the scene, Police requested the protesters not to create a blockade at the court road. At one stage pro BNP lawyers cordoned the students and helped them to enter the court building premises, said a witness Md Sahab Uddin.

Witness said, “The protesters staged a demonstration in front of the Annex building from 11:00am to 3:00pm. During this time, the protesters did not allow people who came to court for legal services to court,”

Chittagong District Bar Association’s general secretary and pro BNP lawyer Mohammad Ashraf Hossain Chowdhury Razzaque and several hundred other lawyers participated at the demonstration.

CDBA secretary Mohammad Ashraf Hossain Chowdhury Razzaque could not be reached for comment.

However, pro Awami League lawyers including Ibrahim Hossain Chowdhury Babul, Chattogram district public prosecutor Iftekhar Shimul Chowdhury protested at blockade to the court building.

Chattogram district public prosecutor Iftekhar Shimul Chowdhury said that court activities were hampered on Wednesday. Many people were not able to attend the court for scheduled work as the road was completely blocked.

Atanu Chakraborty, assistant commissioner (Kotwali zone) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police said Today.

“No untoward situation occurred during the demonstration,” he added.
