Today marks the 82nd death anniversary of the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, who died at the age of 80 on August 7, 1941, according to the Gregorian calendar. However, his death anniversary is observed in Bangladesh on the 22nd of Sraban in the Bangla calendar.

Different cultural organisations across the country will observe the occasion by arranging special programmes. Additionally, various TV channels, including Bangladesh Television (BTV), Channel i, and Maasranga, will telecast special programmes.

On the occasion of Tagore’s death anniversary, Maasranga Television will air a special programme titled ‘Tomar Oshime’ at 10:30 pm, featuring Tagore's poetry, songs, and discussions. Eminent Rabindra Sangeet singer Shama Rahman and young elocutionist Samiul Islam Poluck will perform in this show.

On the other hand, a special programme featuring music, recitation, and discussion titled ‘Tumi Robe Nirobe Hridoye Momo,’ presented by Hasan Mahmud and produced by Shahzaman Mia, will be aired on BTV at 1:05 pm. Soumitra Shekhar, Jhorna Rahman, and Khairul Alam Sobuj will participate in the discussion. Anima Roy and Chaya Karmakar will present songs of Rabindranath, while Jayanta Chattopadhyay and Laila Hasan will recite poems of Tagore in the show.

Based on Rabindranath Tagore's short stories, the tele-drama 'Oparajita' will be aired at 9 pm, and 'Rabindra Chetonai Mujib' will be aired at 10:20 pm on BTV.

Moreover, Channel i will telecast some special programmes to observe Tagore’s death anniversary. A special programme titled 'Sorasori Rabindranath' will be aired at 11:05, which will consist of musical performances of Tagore songs and recitations from his poems, as well as a discussion event. Impress Telefilm's film titled 'Tumi Robe Nirobe,' directed by Mahboba Islam Sumi, will be screened at 3:05 pm. In addition, Keka Ferdausi's special show of Rabindranath Tagore's favourite food will be aired at 6 pm. Also, another special programme titled ‘Tumi Robe Nirobe,’ planned, directed, and presented by Mukit Mojumdar Babu, will be aired at 6:20 pm on the same channel.

Furthermore, Rezwana Chowdhury Banya will present a programme titled ‘Bangabandhur Priyo Rabindranather Gaan’ from Dhanmondi at 8:30 pm on Channel i.
The programme is produced by Shahidul Alam Sachchu.

Rabindranath Tagore was the first non-European poet to win the Nobel Prize for literature. He won the award in 1913 for Song Offerings, the English translation of ‘Gitanjali,’ an anthology of his lyric poems.

His compositions were chosen as the national anthems of two states — Bangladesh’s ‘Amar Shonar Bangla’ and India’s ‘Jana Gana Mana.’
