Police barred Nagorik Oikya rally, demolished stage: Manna

Police today foiled Nagorik Oikya's rally and demolished its stage in the capital's Bhatara while local ruling party men attacked the Nagorik Oikya members later in the afternoon.

Several members of Nagorik Oikya were injured in the attack, party's convener Mahmudur Rahman Manna told a press conference at its office in the evening.

Manna said that they had pre-announced the programme on 'Amar Ekushay' at Madani Avenue in Bhatara area in the afternoon.

Local police barred their preparation for the rally around 11:30am and demolished the stage, said Manna.

Police, however, said that the party didn't seek any permission to hold the rally.

Manna said they tried to hold the programme despite police obstruction and some opposition leaders including Gano Samhati Andolan chief coordinator Zonayed Saki went to the spot to attend the programme around 4:00pm.

Then local Awami League and Chhatra League activists started procession in the area to stop Nagorik Oikya from holding the rally. They hurled bricks and attacked the Nagorik Oikya men with sticks, Manna alleged.
