US search giant Google is considering charging users for features powered by generative artificial intelligence.
Hiding features of its flagship search engine behind a paywall would be a first for Google, which has for years funded its services entirely by advertising.
Google is looking to capitalize on the AI boom amid competition from companies such as ChatGPT and Elon Musk’s xAI. It is reportedly considering adding paid-for AI features to premium subscription services, which already offer access to its new Gemini AI assistant.
Google began testing the AI-powered search engine back in May, sources familiar with the plans told the FT, but executives have not yet decided whether or when to launch it.
