BGMEA’s former President and Managing Director of Evince Limited Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) has been accused of money laundering along with his wife Shabnam Shenaz Chowdhury by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
They remain under ACC scanner allegedly for depositing money into a joint account in Malaysia, sources concerned revealed.
The amount in question is Tk 26,292,000 crore or RM 1,200,000, which was deposited in four installments under the MM2H program, launched by the Malaysian government for foreigners who want to make Malaysia their second home.
According to the investigation report, the couple also purchased flats worth Tk 21,745,615 crore or RM 992,497.24 in Malaysia under the same program. The balance in Ac No- 010142495131 was Tk 2,191,000 lac or RM 100,000 as a term deposit, and in Ac No-303622690101, it was Tk 21,082,431 crore or RM 962,228.71 as a home loan. Additionally, Shah Adeeb Chowdhury, the couple's son, deposited Tk 2,475,830 crore or RM 113,000 in Ac No- 010142495108 under their names, and ACC suspects that there are other accounts in his name as well.
The report also revealed that the accountant received a fund transfer of Tk 2,475,830 or RM 113,000 from Shah Adeeb in 2014. The fund was subsequently withdrawn on the same day and transferred to a third party, Abu Kawser Majumder.
Furthermore, they withdrew Tk 9,829,543 RM 448,632.73 from one of their FD accounts on 4 April 2018, which was used to purchase property worth Tk 5,937,719.55 RM 271,005 and a withdrawal of Tk 3,286,500 RM 15, 0,000 for FD replacement.
When approached by The Daily Messenger, Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) stated that he had no comment on the investigation report against him, and Shabnam Shenaz Chowdhury denied the allegations, saying that they have no assets in any other countries.
ACC commented in the report that the investigation report could be presented to the court as evidence.
The allegations of money laundering against Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) and his wife, Shabnam Shenaz Chowdhury, have come as a shock to many, especially in the textile industry, where Anwar-Ul-Alam Chowdhury (Parvez) has been a prominent figure. It remains to be seen how the case will progress and what the court's verdict will be.
It may be mentioned Malaysian Ringgit (RM) has been converted to Taka (RM 1= Tk 21.91) as of 13 September 2022, according to Google.
