Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Adviser Farida Akhter on Tuesday (8 October) called upon all to reduce the use of antibiotics to ensure food security of the people.

“The use of antibiotics in animals needs to be controlled to ensure food security of the people. Our bodies have become resistant against antibiotics as the element is now available whatever we eat such as vegetables, fruits, fish and meat,” she said.

She was exchanging views with farmers of poultry, livestock and fish at Delduar Upazila of Tangail district.

The adviser called upon the farmers to produce feeds for poultry, livestock and fish instead of purchasing those, saying a massive awareness campaign is needed to pursue it.

Farida stressed the need for stopping contract-farming to check the price hike of the chickens and poultry feeds.

“Traders are making huge buck through contract-farming while the real farmers have been incurring losses,” he added.

She recalled the contribution of the women in the poultry industry, saying, “The womenfolk have been making important contribution to the poultry industry and many women have become self-reliant through the industry.”
