Anwaruzzaman urges UK expats to support him

Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury on Monday (15 May) urged all expatri-ates in the UK to help him win as mayor in the upcoming Sylhet City Corporation election.

The call was made at an election rally organised by the Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury Campaign Committee UK, and the mayoral candidate joined the meeting over Skype.

Speakers said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina nominat-ed Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury for the mayoral election with the aim of developing Sylhet city and solving all the prob-lems of expatriates.

Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury said, "I have been doing poli-tics based on the ideals of the Father of the Nation since my school life. I have been working for the greater Sylhet diaspora, and I have stood by the expatriates who have heard about the problems of a class ofland in the country who are indulging in absorbing the wealth of expatriates." "The leader loves me, that's why she nominated me for Sylhet city. I will have the opportunity to work more as a public representative," he added.

"I have already announced the election manifesto. Not only for Syl- het city, but I will work as a representative of all ex-patriates. I have always been with you," he said.

If Chowdhury is elected mayor of Sylhet city, he will play a role in building a smart Sylhet city, and the hopes and aspi-rations of mil- lions of expatriates will also be rewarded, speakers said.

UK Jubo League President Fakhrul Islam Madhu presided over the meeting, while UK Jubo League Joint Secretary Jamal Ahmad Khan and UK Jubo League General Secre-tary Salim Ahmad Khan jointly moderated the programme.

Among others, United Kingdom Awami League General Secretary Syed Sajidur Rahman Farooq, United Kingdom Awami League Organising Secretary Abdul Ahad Chow-dhury, Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury's son Rai Hanuzzaman Chowdhury, United Kingdom Women's Awami League President Khaleda Qureshi, Vice Presi- dent Anjuman Ara Anju, Meher Nigar Chowdhury, Nazma Hos- sain, Rahela Sheikh, Hosne Ara Matin, Syeda Nazneen Sultana Shi- kha, Kalpana Hamza, Amina Ali, Atafur Rahman Mojahid, Nurul Haque Lala Mia, Shah Azizur Rahman, Advocate Shah Farooq, Robin Pal, Koyes Chowdhury, Zobair Ahmad, Syed Tamim Ahmad, and Ahad Chowdhury Babu were present. A large number of expa- triates from different cities in Britain participated in the meeting.
