‘BAJUS will list dishonest jewellery traders’

No Bangladesh Jeweller's Association (BAJUS) member will be allowed to do jewellery business in dishonest ways and the association will make a list of unscrupulous businessmen, the association’s Vice President Md Reponul Hasan has said.     

BAJUS members have to follow the association’s rules if they want to do business and they will not be allowed to sell gold beyond the prices set by the trade body, he said while addressing a view-exchange meeting of BAJUS' Chandpur district unit on Friday.  

In the chief guest's speech at the meeting, Reponul said BAJUS is working to ensure that all big and small traders can do business honestly. He also said those who do gold business must become members of BAJUS. 

“The list of the traders in Dhaka who are not BAJUS members has already been finalised,” he said. 

During the meeting, the BAJUS central leaders listened to the various problems faced by the local traders and offered solutions to those. The meeting was presided over by BAJUS Chandpur unit President Mustafa Ful Miar. Besides, BAJUS Assistant Secretary Md Imran Chowdhury and Executive Member Md Mazibar Rahman Khan were also present in the meeting.

The central leaders of BAJUS are now on a nationwide tour to bring more dynamism to the organisational activities of the association. As part of the tour, an exchange meeting was also held in Barishal on Friday.

Masudur Rahman, vice president of the association, said that BAJUS has been transformed into a brand by its President Sayem Sobhan Anvir. He also said that Bangladesh is now moving towards industrialisation and gold bars with the “Made in Bangladesh” seal will be produced in the country.

The meeting in Barishal presided over by Sheikh Mohammad Musa was also attended by BAJUS Executive Member Pabitra Chandra Ghosh, General Secretary of BAJUS Barishal unit Nurul Amin and local jewellery traders. 

Also, as part of the nationwide tour organised by BAJUS, the apex body of gold businessmen, view-exchange meetings were held in Pirojpur, Lakshmipur, Naogaon, and Joypurhat on Friday.

Meanwhile, BAJUS on Thursday announced a reduction in gold prices through a circular signed by Masudur Rahman, chairman of the Price Determination and Monitoring Standing Committee of the association. 

The price of one bhori (11.664 grams) of 22-carat gold was cut by Tk 1,878. The new price stood at Tk 1,09,163. The price of a 21-carat gold bar was slashed by Tk 1,808 per bhori and would now cost Tk 1,04,194.

Besides, the price of an 18-carat gold bar was reduced by Tk 1,552 per bhori and would now cost Tk 89,311. Apart from that, the price of one bhori of traditional gold was cut by Tk 1,283 to Tk 74,276.
