After opening the bidding round on 10 March this year, seven international energy giants have bought the 2D multiclient seismic survey data of the deep sea to study the potential for exploring Bangladesh's maritime area in the Bay of Bengal.

To attract more companies to the bidding round, Petrobangla, the state-owned oil, gas, and mineral exploration corporation, started promotional activities through a programme on Wednesday (8 May) in Dhaka. The corporation hopes eight more companies will buy the data to study the potential.

10 international companies have participated in the programme. They are TGS, a survey company, Petronas Global, US-based ExxonMobil, Chevron, Inpex Corporation, Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), ENI SPA Italy, Kris Energy Singapore, and Indian Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).

Petrobangla has floated the bidding for nine shallow blocks and fifteen offshore blocks for gas, oil, and mineral resources exploration. Onshore blocks 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11, as well as deep-sea blocks 8 to 22, will be under the bidding round.
