Standard Chartered Bangladesh has provided individuals and families in need with food packages and cooked meals in partnership with the Bidyanondo Foundation. In total, this intervention – to fight hunger and establish greater food security – has reached approximately 12,000 individuals across Dhaka.

This initiative was started during Ramadan with the donation of 2,000 hot sehri meals to ultra-poor people who are either slum dwellers or who sleep on footpaths around Dhaka. As part of this effort, a total of 2,000 households have also received food packages. Each food package is designed to provide sustenance for a family for 15 days. To meet dietary and nutrition needs, food packages contain rice, pulses, cooking oil, milk, and other essentials. A thousand of these beneficiary households are comprised of low-wage earners whose livelihoods have been heavily impacted by damages caused by the Bangabazar fire. The remaining 1,000 households are low-income families from Dhaka slum communities.

Naser Ezaz Bijoy, Chief Executive Officer, of Standard Chartered Bangladesh, said, “It is a blessing to play a role in alleviating and reducing the hardships faced by those who are struggling to put food on the table. Providing underprivileged residents with food packages, during a difficult time, is our way of saying that we care about the community where we work. Additionally, workers and their families were heavily impacted by the Bangabazar fire. The Bank is honored to provide support to those in need in the aftermath of this tragic event. We are proud to step up and make an effort to ease the difficulties faced by vulnerable community members. We hope that our drive to be here for good will make a positive difference in lives of those around us.”

As the nation’s long-term partner in progress, Standard Chartered has consistently been linked to Bangladesh’s inspiring story of growth and resilience. For more than 118 years, the Bank has been dedicated to driving commerce and growth without leaving people behind, negatively impacting the planet, or creating divisions that diminish our sense of community. The Bank’s community engagement and sustainability initiatives are oriented around being here for good.

Bidyanondo Foundation is a non-profit organisation registered under the Bangladesh Department of Social Services. It works to help the poor community of Bangladesh and performs various social welfare activities.
