As the nomination process for the 12th National Parliament elections gets underway, Pradyut Kumar Talukdar, an executive member of the Awami League in Sunamganj District and the founder of the Prayas Group, has expressed his commitment to transforming the Dirai Shalla constituency in Sunamganj. In an interview with The Daily Messenger, staff reporter Anjan Chandra Dev delves into the current status of the area, its developmental trajectory, and Talukdar's future vision for the region. Pradyut Kumar Talukdar emphasises the importance of community engagement, collaboration with various stakeholders, and a sustainable approach to development. Through these efforts, he aims to ensure that the Dirai Shalla Upazila not only undergoes positive transformation but also becomes a model for smart and inclusive development in the broader context of Sunamganj District.

Question: I would like to understand, given your background as a businessman, what motivates you to participate in the MP election?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: While I do run a business, my involvement in politics dates back to my student years. Over the years, I've been actively engaged in various social service initiatives aimed at fostering the development of our community. My commitment to the Awami League's political endeavors is substantial.

It's noteworthy that Bangladesh, under the leadership of our Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has become a model for development. Recognising the importance of young leadership, our Prime Minister envisions a Smart Bangladesh for the future. I believe that my active involvement in politics and dedication to social service, coupled with the support of the Awami League, positions me to contribute significantly to the development of our area. If elected, I see myself playing a pivotal role in realising both the aspirations of our community and the Prime Minister's vision for a Smart Bangladesh.

Question: Could you share some details about the public service initiatives you've undertaken for the people of the area? How do you hope people will remember your contributions?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: My commitment to serving the community has been unwavering, and I've been involved in various initiatives that aim to make a positive impact on people's lives. Annually, I organise the distribution of winter clothes, reaching out to people from all walks of life. Last year, during a historic flood in Sunamganj, I provided support to 12,000 families, standing by them in their time of need.

In response to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, my team and I worked tirelessly to assist the vulnerable and less fortunate. We distributed essential supplies, including food products, masks, and hand sanitisers, aiming to protect those who were most affected.

Recognising the challenges in the education system, particularly due to limited access, I took the initiative to establish over 20 pre-primary schools in the area. These schools not only facilitate academic learning but also emphasise moral education, ensuring a well-rounded development for the children.

To address the unique needs of the Haor region, I founded the Haor Prayas Foundation. The foundation is dedicated to improving the quality of life for the people in the Haor area, reflecting my ongoing commitment to sustainable development and community welfare.

Question: Some may wonder if your involvement in public service is a strategic move linked to your candidacy in the MP election. Can you clarify whether your altruistic endeavors are driven by a genuine commitment to public welfare or if there is a political motive behind them?

Pradyut Kumar Talukdar: The ethos of public service in our family transcends any political aspirations. This tradition is deeply ingrained, having been passed down through generations. Witnessing my grandfather consistently stand by the community and observing my father extend support to those in need, regardless of their religious affiliations, has been instrumental in shaping my values.

The lessons learned from my family emphasise the significance of selfless service and coming to the aid of people in distress. The acts of providing food, clothing, and land without discrimination between Hindus and Muslims, carried out by my father, exemplify the spirit of compassion and empathy that guides our actions. This commitment to public welfare is not a calculated strategy for political gain but rather a genuine reflection of the principles instilled in me by my family—a commitment to humanity that goes beyond any political agenda.

Question: Suranjit Sengupta has his wife competing in your area; what are the prospects of you surviving the nomination race?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: Suranjit Sengupta was a distinguished parliamentarian and a leader among the masses. I closely followed his actions throughout his tenure. Following his demise, his wife, Jaya Sengupta, has been representing us as a Member of Parliament for an extended period. However, as time has passed and Suranjit Sengupta is no longer actively involved, it has become challenging to dedicate the same level of time.

Given the nature of our area, I believe there is a pressing need for youthful leadership to drive development.

Q: What challenges do you see if you get the chance to become a Member of Parliament?

Pradyut Kumar Talukdar: If given the opportunity to serve as a Member of Parliament, I foresee several challenges. One major concern is the longstanding issue of underdevelopment in the Haor region, despite its immense natural beauty. While there have been plans and initiatives in the past, the execution has not been as comprehensive as envisioned by our founding leader, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The Haor Development Board was formed in 1974, but progress has been slow, especially after the killing of Sheikh Mujib.

To address this, I would need to work towards ensuring the effective implementation of the Prime Minister's ambitious 20-year plan for Haor development, spanning from 2012 to 2032. Additionally, building awareness and promoting the Haor areas as tourist destinations could be a challenge but presents a significant opportunity for economic growth if successful.

Question: Many are hoping for a nomination from Dirai Shalla; is there any conflict in the party?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: While conflicts can arise within any political party, I believe that the Awami League remains united when it comes to elections. The Sunamganj District Awami League, in particular, operates as a well-organised committee. With the smart leadership of the district Awami League's dedicated president Mukut Bhai and the revolutionary General Secretary Palin Bhai, I am confident that the Awami League will secure victory in all five seats of Sunamganj.

Although there may be several individuals aspiring for nominations, the final decision rests with the Prime Minister, who possesses a strong vision and discretion. We trust that the Prime Minister will make a decision that aligns with the party's goals, and we are committed to supporting whoever receives the nomination. Regardless of who is chosen, our collective effort will be directed towards the success of the Awami League in the upcoming elections.

Q: Have you taken any steps to garner the attention of the Prime Minister for a potential nomination?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: Certainly, my longstanding commitment to the local community speaks for itself. My family has a history of service to the people in this area — from my grandparents to my uncle, who led the tenancy movement, and my elder brother, Dr. Bidyut Kumar Talukder, a founding convenor of Shahjalal Science and Technology University Chhatra League.

Personally, I have initiated efforts to provide employment opportunities for the youth in the area through various institutions within my Prayash group. Additionally, I have been actively involved in endeavors to create a drug-free society. My hope is to receive a nomination from the Awami League, led by the esteemed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. If given the opportunity, I am confident in my ability to contribute to the development of a smart Dirai-Shalla upazila through my efficiency and dedication.

Q: Do you have any plans for the youth in the Haor region?

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: Certainly, under the visionary leadership of the Honorable Prime Minister’s son Sajib Wazed Joy, our country is witnessing the development of a technology-based economy. Recognising the crucial role that youth play in shaping the future, I am keen on working closely with them. To build a smart Bangladesh, it is imperative that we actively engage and collaborate with the youth.

I advocate for the involvement of educated young individuals in politics, as they bring fresh perspectives and ideas to the table. Youths have to be joined in the Smart Youth Committee in the Haor area, aiming to channel the energy and potential of the youth towards the development and progress of our nation. You have to work with it. Educated youth should be brought into politics.

Messenger: Best wishes to you.

Pradyut Kumar Talukder: Thanks. Best wishes for The Daily Messenger.
