Daily laborers, hailing from various districts, especially the northern regions of the country, find themselves in distress at the Manikganj bus stand, locally known as "Kamlar Hat," during the harsh winter weather. Unemployment has left them without money for food, shelter, and basic necessities in the severe cold.

These laborers, including agricultural workers, masons, and road construction laborers from districts like Rajshahi, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Chapai, Nawabganj, Bogra, Natore, Dinajpur, Thakurga, Pabna, and Sirajganj, are currently stranded at the bus stand. The usual practice of waiting for landlords, contractors, and others to settle labor prices has been disrupted, leaving more than 400 workers with no source of income.

Unlike previous experiences, the current situation is unfamiliar to these laborers. Some arrived weeks ago when the weather was milder and brought winter clothes, while others who came more recently lack adequate warm clothing. Typically, those who employ them also provide accommodation, food, and sometimes winter clothing. However, with the delayed start of paddy planting and other activities due to winter, these necessities are scarce.

The plight of these unemployed workers in search of opportunities is dire. Many are enduring inhumane conditions, facing extreme cold without proper food, clothing, or shelter. Sleepless nights have become commonplace, and due to financial constraints, returning to their home areas is not an option for many.

Among those suffering, Ah Khalek, a 65-year-old man from Natore, shared his struggles, stating that he hasn't had a proper meal in six days. Idris from the same district lamented sitting idle for 14 days without work or food, unable to return home due to financial constraints. Ah Malek from Sirajganj revealed that he hasn't eaten in three days since exhausting the food he brought with him.

The desperation is palpable among these workers. Hossain from Natore sold his last possession, a mobile phone, for a meager amount. Moazzem Hossain from Bogra parted with his warm clothing for a minimal sum just to buy two loaves of bread. Sohail Hossain from Tangail expressed the difficulty in finding work at the current rates, stating they now receive 300 taka instead of the previous 400 taka for a day's labor.

The workers collectively voice a simple plea: assistance with basic food is enough to make them happy. They are grappling with extreme hunger and challenging circumstances.

In response to the situation, Deputy Commissioner Rehna Akhtar mentioned the distribution of blankets among the homeless individuals at the bus stand area. However, the issue of food scarcity was not discussed during this initiative. She urged those in need to contact her for assistance.

The article highlights the severe hardships faced by daily laborers stranded at the Manikganj bus stand, emphasising their struggle for survival in the bitter cold without adequate resources. The call for assistance, particularly in providing basic sustenance, underscores the urgency of addressing their immediate needs.
