Laksmipur district police have initiated a comprehensive plan to expand the coverage of CCTV cameras across a 25 km area, encompassing municipal towns and highways within the district. This move comes in response to a surge in criminal activities, including open murders, fights, thefts, and robberies that have plagued Laksmipur Municipal for the past 3-4 years.

While some CCTV cameras were previously installed in the city for security and criminal detection, a significant portion has become nonfunctional due to a lack of maintenance, resulting in a diminished impact on crime prevention. Recognizing the need for enhanced surveillance, District Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Tarek bin Rashid, has spearheaded the initiative to extend CCTV coverage across the district.

In October 2024, supported by public representatives and various stakeholders, the district police superintendent decided to install 250 cameras. Initially, 3 cameras were strategically placed at 50 crucial locations, including Dalal Bazar, Government College, New Market, Dakbungo intersection, and 9 km of the highway, among others. The surveillance of these CCTV cameras is conducted from a dedicated control room established at the Detective Branch of the Superintendent of Police office. Hasan Mostafa Swapan, Additional Superintendent of Police, Crime and Operations of Laksmipur district, oversees the overall management of this surveillance network.

AKM Azizur Rahman, District Intelligence Branch DIO1, emphasized the significance of the CCTV cameras in aiding criminal identification and apprehension, particularly in cases involving accidents or criminal activities. With the current coverage spanning 9 km of the highway and 26 km of the city, plans are underway to extend the CCTV network to encompass all the upazila cities of Laksmipur district. The district police are set to install 500 additional cameras at 10 to 12 key locations within all the police station areas of the district.

Residents have expressed their support and appreciation for the initiative, citing specific instances where CCTV cameras have facilitated the swift identification and apprehension of criminals. Al-Amin Sikdar, a resident of the Dalal Bazar area, lauded the effectiveness of the cameras in aiding law enforcement and emphasized the positive impact of enhanced surveillance on crime control and the city's modernization.

OC Shahadat Hossain Titu of the Intelligence Branch of Laksmipur District highlighted the immediate impact of the installed cameras, noting a reduction in theft, robbery, vandalism, and juvenile gang crime. Superintendent of Police of Laksmipur District, Mohammad Tarek Bin Rashid, echoed these sentiments, underscoring the role of CCTV cameras in reducing criminal activities and traffic congestion. The state-of-the-art cameras, strategically placed at critical intersections along a 35-km stretch of the city and highways, have already led to the identification of seven cases and expedited criminal apprehensions. Plans are also underway to install cameras in Oli-Gali, further enhancing the capability to swiftly identify and respond to criminal activities.
