The once flourishing twin canal system in the Mallickerberd Union of Rampal Upazila, Bagerhat, is now on the brink of extinction due to illegal encroachments by local influential figures. Despite having modern communication systems, including culverts and drainage infrastructure, the canals are gradually dying, causing distress among the local populace.

The deteriorating condition of the canals is primarily attributed to illegal fish farming activities orchestrated by influential individuals who have erected dams at various points along the waterways. This unlawful practice not only disrupts the natural flow of water but also obstructs traditional rice cultivation in the region. Moreover, during the monsoon season, the encroachment exacerbates flooding issues, posing significant challenges to the community.

According to Md Suman Howladar, a resident of Mallik's Bari Union, the canal's encroachment has been ongoing for a prolonged period under the patronage of influential figures within the union. Farmers like Prakas Mondal lament the loss of their livelihoods as they witness the gradual demise of the canals they once relied upon for sustenance.

Nepal Mandal, a UP member of Ward No. 9 in Mallikerberd Union, highlighted the pervasive atmosphere of fear instilled by the encroachers, making it difficult for locals to voice their concerns or resist the illegal activities. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, including the Upazila Executive Officer, Rahima Sultana Bushra, no decisive action has been taken to address the issue.

In response to the escalating crisis, Upazila Executive Officer Rahima Sultana Bushra has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted, and legal measures will be pursued against the perpetrators. However, locals remain skeptical about the effectiveness of such promises, fearing further exploitation and reprisals from the encroachers.

As the fate of the canals hangs in the balance, the residents of Mallickerberd Union implore the administration to intervene decisively to save these vital waterways from irreversible degradation. The preservation of the canals not only ensures the sustainability of agriculture but also safeguards the livelihoods of countless individuals dependent on them for their survival. Failure to act promptly risks the loss of a crucial resource that sustains both the environment and the community it serves.
