Awami League has decided to expel Abul Kalam Azad, an independent member of parliament from Cumilla-4 (Debidwar) constituency, from the party permanently after he was dismissed as the organizing secretary of the district Awami League.

Cumilla North District Awami League has taken this action against him because of his continuous involvement in anti-party activities. He was also accused of being involved in a car attack on 7 March upon Ruhul Amin, the president of district Awami League.

Party’s General Secretary Roshan Ali Master said that the decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the district Awami League on Thursday (21 March). In a press release, given to the media on Friday, he said, “the meeting of the Executive Council of Cumilla North District Awami League was held on Thursday in the presence of most its members. Azad’s attacks and cases against party leaders and activists before and after the election were strongly condemned in that meeting.”

The meeting thanked Central Awami League for dismissing Azad from all posts considered to his association with the attack on Ruhul Amin's car. It was also decided to apply to the central to take action against the Chatra League and Jubo League activists responsible for the incident. Anguish was expressed in the meeting due to the lack of progress in the case filed at Chandina police station about the attack on March 7.

Abul Kalam Azad was the chairman of Debidwar Upazila Parishad and Organizing Secretary of Cumilla North District Awami League from February 28, 2021 until the 12th National Election. He was an elected Member of Parliament as an independent candidate from Cumilla-4 Constituency in 12th National Parliament Election.

Cumilla District Awami League’s General Secretary Roshan Ali Master said to The Daily Messenger that MP Azad was fired as he has acted beyond Party’s principal and policy.  He got elected by the supports of BNP-Jamaat, he added.

On the other hand, The Daily Messenger could not reach Abul Kalam Azad (MP) over telephone.
