Biju festivals to be celebrated in Rangamati

The 4-day long Biju Sangrai Baisuk Vishu Bihu and Sangkrain festival started with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Rangamati Cultural Institute grounds on Wednesday afternoon

Around the main social festival of tribal people in Chittagong Hill Tracts, various colorful programs have started in Rangamati. This traditional festival is celebrated every year on Chaitra Sankranti (Last day of Chaitra) to mark the end of the year and the beginning of a new year.

Around this festival, two celebration committees have organized different ceremonies in Rangamati. This festival is celebrated by the Chakmas as Biju, the Marmaras celebrate it as Sangrai and  the Tripuras call it Baisuk.

Various cultural fairs along with different traditional sports like Ghilakhela, Nadengkhela, Gelanghuli, Tengabhangagit of tribals have been organized around this main social festival of the hilly people. In addition, traditional social and cultural items of the tribals are displayed in the fair.

Meanwhile, around the Biju,the Sangrai  and the Baisuk festival , a 4-day long fair has started at the Rangamati Cultural Institute ground under the joint organization of the Rangamati Hill District Council and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. This fair will end on April 6. 

On Wednesday (April 3) afternoon, the procession started from the Rangamati Government College grounds and ended at the Cultural Institute grounds. Nahid Izahar Khan MP, Minister of State for Cultural Affairs cut the ribbon at the end of the Anand procession. After that, harmony dances were performed by various tribal communities wearing their traditional clothes. A discussion meeting was held. Rangamati Hills Zilla Parishad Chairman Angsui Pru Chowdhury presided over the discussion meeting as special guests. Rangamati Constituency MP Dipankar Talukdar, Rangamati Reserved Women Constituency Member of Parliament Jarathi Tanchangya, Rangamati Region Commander Brigadier General Sohail Ahmed, District Administrator Mohammad Mosharraf were present as special guests. Khan and District Police Superintendent Abu Tauhid and others.

After the discussion, the guests visited the stalls of the fair held at the Rangamati Cultural Institute grounds. This year Biju Sangrai Baisuk Vishu Bihu and Sangkrine fairs have more than 35 fair stalls including food, clothes and accessories.

On the other hand, various programs are going on to celebrate Biju, Sangrai, Baisuk Vishu Bihu and Sangkrain and A 3-day cultural fair will be held in Rangamati organized by Biju Sangrai Baisuk Vishu Bihu and another celebration committee of Sangkrain. It will start on April 10 and end on April 12. Nirupa Dewan, former member of National Human Resource Commission, will be present at the inauguration of the festival on Wednesday (April 10). She will also be opening the rally officially on that day.

Chakma Circle Chief Barrister Debashish Roy will be the chief guest along with people from various professions of Rangamati will also be present there. The Anand Sobhayatra will end at the District Shilpakala Academy from Rangamati Municipality, playing the traditional Ubgeet, Genghuli and other cultural instruments of the Chakmads. Prakriti Ranjan Chakma, convenor of the celebration committee, said this information. The celebration committee has organized traditional Chakmad sports, flower offering ceremony and Chakmad sacrifice.

Usually on the first day Chakmara Phulbizhu, Marmara Paichhoai, Tripura Hari Baisuk and on the second day i.e. the main day of the festival is celebrated as Chakmara Moolbiju, Marmara Sangkraing Akya and Tripura’s Baisukma and last day as Chakma Gojyopojya Day, the first day of Bengali New Year, Marmas will celebrate Sangkrai Appaying and Tripuras will celebrate Bisikatal. This major social festival is started by the tribal people by offering flowers on 12th April.
