At least 15 shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a market in Brahmanbari's Sarail upazila in the small hours on Friday (10 May).

No casualties were reported.

Locals said the fire broke out at a shop in a Tin shed Market owned by Nesar Doctor in Shahbajpur II Gate area of Shahbajpur Union of the upazila around 3:30am and it soon engulfed the adjoining shops.

On information, two fire tenders were pressed into service and it took them nearly two hours to bring the flames under control,  said  Riaz Ahmed, station officer of Sarail Fire Service and Civil Defense.

Fire officials suspect an electrical short-circuit at the first shop has triggered the fire, he said.

On Friday morning, the newly elected chairman of Sarail Upazila Parishad Md Sher Alam Mia, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Mejba Ul Alam BhUiya and Zilla Parishad member Payal Hossain Mridha visited the scene.

The fire caused a loss of around Tk2.5 crore, the affected businessmen claimed.

However, the exact amount of loss could not be ascertained immediately, said the fire official.
