Two individuals were brutally murdered in a dispute over a fish farm in Uzirpur upazila of Barishal. The deceased have been identified as Md. Idris Howladar (40), a businessman from Satla Bazaar, and his cousin Sagar Howladar (27).
Idris Howladar was the son of Sohrab Howladar from Paschim Satla village, while Sagar Howladar was the son of Shahadat Howladar from the same household, as confirmed by Uzirpur police.
The incident occurred at around 11 PM on Saturday, August 24. Idris, after closing his business, was returning home to Paschim Satla Ward No. 2 on his cousin Sagar’s motorcycle. As they reached the western slope of the Satla Bridge, a group of unknown assailants stopped them and viciously attacked Idris, cutting his abdomen and leg tendons. When Sagar tried to intervene, he was also severely injured in the frenzied attack. Hearing their screams, locals rushed to the scene and took them to Agoiljhara Upazila Health Complex. Later, they were referred to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for advanced treatment, where Idris succumbed to his injuries around 1:45 AM, followed by Sagar a few hours later.
The victims' uncle, former UP member Monafser Howladar, accused Satla Union Chairman Shahin Howladar and his cousin, Jubo League leader Asad Howladar, of orchestrating the murder.
He further stated that on the night of August 17, 2023, the fish farm, poultry farm, and water pump owned by Idris Howladar were set on fire. Following this incident, Idris had filed a case against Shahin Howladar, Asad Howladar, and 40-45 others. Shahin had to serve time in jail because of this, and Monafser believes this murder was committed out of revenge.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Uzirpur Model Police Station, Md. Zafar Ahmed, stated that the double murder might have resulted from a long-standing dispute over the fish farm with Idris Howladar. Efforts to arrest the perpetrators are underway, and a case is being prepared.
