A wild elephant was found dead in a paddy field in Jhenaigati upazila of Sherpur district in the morning on Friday (5 May), according to forest officials.

Over the past few weeks, several herds of elephants from Garo Hill along the border have been causing damage to crops and vegetables in Kangsha Union of the upazila. To prevent crop damage, farmers installed electric wires surrounding the croplands.

The body of the elephant, believed to be around three and a half years old, was recovered from the cropland of one Nuhu Miah at Paschim Bakakura village under Kangsha union in the morning, according to Md. Mokrul Islam Akanda, a Rangatiya range official of the Forest Department.

It is believed that the elephant died from electrocution while attempting to enter the cropland. Electric and GI wires were seized from the area, but the exact cause of death will be determined after an autopsy report.

Dr. ATM Fayezul Razzak Akanda, a livestock officer of the upazila, stated that there were no visible marks of injuries on the elephant's body, and samples were collected for a viscera test to determine the precise reason for its death.
