The Malayan Night Heron, a rare inhabitant of evergreen forests, has made a surprise appearance in the shallow forests of Khagrachari. Known for their rarity and ability to blend seamlessly into the forest, these elusive birds have rarely been observed, let alone photographed.
The recent sighting marks the first time that the Night Heron has been seen in the shallow forests of Khagrachari. Previously, their presence was only known in the depths of Kaptai National Park, but no photographic evidence had been captured until now.

A pair of Night Herons can often be found in the forest, continuously on the move as they search for nesting spots. However, their alertness and sensitivity to their surroundings make it extremely challenging to photograph them. Even the sound of falling leaves is enough to startle them into flight, requiring photographers to maintain a considerable distance. After two days of dedicated efforts, several pictures were successfully taken from behind the protective cover of bushes, ensuring the bird's tranquility.

The Malayan Night Heron distinguishes itself from the Indian Pond Heron through its larger size. Measuring approximately 51 cm in length, it boasts a copper-red body and a black beak. The distinctively long crest adds to its majestic appearance, while the face and neck exhibit a vibrant red color with black spots adorning the neck and chest. Its eyes, strikingly yellow, capture the attention of onlookers. Juveniles display a large crest and dark spots across their bodies. When communicating, the Night Heron emits a loud call resembling 'Oooo or aarh aarh,' although its mellow tone does not carry far. Preferring seclusion, these birds are commonly found in the evergreen forests of Chittagong Hill Tracts. Apart from Bangladesh, the Malayan Night Heron can be found in various countries, including India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Myanmar, China, Taiwan, and Japan.

Sabuj Chakma, an avid photographer from Khagrachari, expressed his excitement, stating, "The Malayan Night Heron is a rare species of bird in our country. They are not seen everywhere, and occasionally, they can be spotted in the depths of evergreen forests."
