With Eid-ul-Adha approaching, the talk of the town revolves around the grandeur of large-sized bulls. Among them, the remarkable appearance of Kalu Mama in Sherpur has captured everyone's fascination. Valued at 10 lakh, this 22 mound black bull has become the center of attention. The owner proudly claims that it is the largest bull in Sherpur.
Bahadur Islam, a car driver by profession from the Kasba Kathgarh area of Sherpur municipality, has nurtured Kalu Mama as a cherished hobby. Standing at an impressive height of 5 feet and measuring 9 feet in length, this dark-complexioned bull boasts a striking presence.
Reflecting on his inspiration, Bahadur Islam shared, "Whenever I drove through Pabna and Sirajganj, I admired the magnificent cows there. I aspired to bring a similar cow to Sherpur. So far, I have spent 400,000 BDT on Kalu Mama, including its upkeep expenses. The purchase cost added another 500,000 BDT. Now, I am offering Kalu Mama for sale at a price of 1 million BDT."
Furthermore, the owner of Kalu Mama mentioned that the bull was raised solely on indigenous feed. Corn, jab (a type of grass), raw grass, tin husk, wheat husk, and paddy straw constituted its diet, along with a variety of fruits. Bahadur Islam's devotion to his favorite cow is evident as he feeds Kalu Mama whatever he can procure. Interestingly, grapes top the list of Kalu Mama's favorite foods, receiving ample servings.
Dr. Md. Mostafizur Rahman, the District Livestock Officer, highlighted that numerous farmers in the district have prepared such cows for sacrificial purposes. The sale of cows from various households is already underway. Farmers are poised to benefit significantly from the current cattle market. The Livestock Department extends support to farmers through training programs and other means, ensuring they achieve considerable profits by naturally fattening their cattle.
