Shahera Begum, an extraordinary resident of Kakjor village in Manikganj, has devoted herself in midwifery, profoundly impacting the lives of numerous families for more than three decades. At the age of 60, she stands as an irreplaceable pillar within her community, extending her compassionate expertise to facilitate the natural births of almost a thousand newborns in Kakjor and the surrounding villages.
What sets Shahera Begum apart is her steadfast belief in the importance of natural childbirth over cesarean sections, prioritizing the well-being of both mother and child. She tirelessly advocates for this approach among the mothers in her village and refuses any payment for her services.
In 2021, Shahera Begum's dedication earned her a prestigious award and recognition from the local administration.
Her impact extends far beyond her role as a midwife. Parents, grandparents, and siblings affectionately consider her an extended family member, often seeking her help in times of need.
Shahera Begum's journey began in the late 1970s when Kakjor village lacked proper roads and healthcare facilities. Expectant mothers had to undertake perilous journeys to district or sub-district hospitals, resulting in tragic maternal deaths. Witnessing these heart-wrenching situations, Shahera Begum decided to become a traditional birth attendant, despite her lack of formal training.
Over time, she gained invaluable experience by working alongside nurses and doctors at hospitals, earning the trust of expectant mothers in the area. Most women in the village preferred giving birth at home, but this came with its own set of challenges, including the difficulty of identifying complications within the first 24 hours of childbirth.
To address these issues, Shahera Begum took it upon herself to provide essential information and guidance to pregnant women in the village. She became a familiar face, visiting homes and offering advice and support to expecting mothers, even in remote areas.
Mrinal Kanti Ghosh, a health assistant at the Ghiore Upazila Health Complex, highlighted Shahera Begum's advanced training and the provision of necessary equipment like blood pressure monitors to ensure her work can continue without interruptions.
Shahera Begum's unwavering dedication has made her an indispensable and beloved figure in the community. She not only brings new life into the world but also provides vital guidance and support to mothers during their pregnancies, ensuring the health and well-being of both mother and child throughout the process. Her story is a testament to the power of selflessness and the profound impact one individual can have on an entire community.
