The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has found the involvement of two brothers of Abdur Rahman Badi, a former lawmaker from Cox's Bazar, in drug trade and is going to seize their assets.

Aminur Rahman and Abdur Sukkur are the two brothers.

The CID warned that even Badi would not be spared if his involvement is also found during the investigation.

This came as CID Chief Mohammad Ali Mia, who is an additional inspector general of police, was addressing a press conference at the department’s headquarters in the capital’s Malibagh on Wednesday.

The CID said it has started seizing the assets of the “godfathers of drug trade”.

Ali said the CID has been able to thoroughly investigate drug-related money laundering cases by identifying drug dealers and godfathers and bring them to book.

“We initially investigated 35 cases and found that the godfathers own assets of around Tk 178.44 crore, including houses, cars, land, brick kilns, and bank deposits. We have decided to seize all the assets, which will be deposited in the government treasury,” he said.

The official also said the CID has seized assets worth Tk 8.11 crore, including 9.14 acres of land and two houses, in three of the cases and also frozen bank deposits of around Tk 1.01 crore in several money laundering cases.

“The process of confiscating another 35.173 acres of land, 12 houses, and a car with an estimated value of Tk 36.82 crore is going on,” said Ali.

The CID chief further said all the godfathers would be brought to book gradually. He urged everyone to provide the CID with information on them.
Experts have hailed the CID crackdown, saying this will prevent drug traders from making more money illegally from this business.

Dr Kudrat-E-Khuda Babu, a professor and head of the law department at Daffodil International University, said, “This is a very effective initiative. If the CID takes such initiatives across the country, it will send a serious warning to drug dealers.”
