Ending one's life occurs in a flick of a moment. Committing suicide is a decision to end a life. But it leaves behind their friends, relatives, well-wishers and neighbours to mourn the death of the victim.

Committing to end a life is not limited to poor or frustrated people. It cut across all strata of life, social backgrounds and economic difficulties. According to human physiatrists, a person is, of course, suffering from mental health issues.

To friends, colleagues and relatives that person may not behave erratically or abnormally. Would speak no ills nor express the person's frustration, or have spoken ills of the people and society have committed suicide.

Celebrated and famous academicians, actors, conquerors, invaders, journalists, politicians, singers, sportspersons, underworld dons, writers, and sailors have committed suicide.

Cleopatra, Marilyn Monroe, Ernest Hemingway, Robert Clive, and Adolf Hitler are among thousands of famous persons, who decided not to live on this earth.

The issue once again, the issue has been in the news media and social media after Rabindra Sangeet celebrated singer Saadi Mohammad and a public university student, Fairuz Sadaf Abontika, decided to leave this world.

Experts explain that such a tendency is a silent epidemic of suicide in Bangladesh. The country of 169 million people, records approximately 10,000 suicides every year, a figure researchers say is steadily increasing. The rate is 128.08 people per 100,000 dying by suicide in Bangladesh every year.

Over 7 lakh people a year die by suicide around the world each year. This problem is especially worrisome among young people. The World Health Organisation (WHO) identifies suicide as the second leading cause of death among individuals aged 10 to 24.

However, suicide and suicide attempts are classified as criminal offences in Bangladesh. Under the Bangladesh Penal Code, the police have the authority to arrest and courts to punish people who attempt suicide.

The reason for the tragedies could be explained. The degradation of social values and morals, the politicisation of educational institutions, and a culture of impunity have made sexual harassment a serious social problem, according to academics and experts from different areas.

In addition to mental health, factors leading to dowry, family abuse, failure in romance, poor exam results, bullying, eve-teasing, drug addiction, internet addiction, poverty, loan default and unemployment are contributing factors to suicide in Bangladesh.

However, most deaths by suicide can be prevented if family, relatives, friends, or nearby people are a little aware and show a little more care.

According to mental health experts, suicide is preventable. In most cases, a little awareness can prevent such unexpected deaths of loved ones.

Social awareness, the practice of moral values from families to educational institutions, quality education, and the establishment of a democratic society are now necessary, said social campaigners.
