A freshmen orientation (Spring 2024) organised by the Department of English, Stamford University Bangladesh, was held on 3 March at the university’s Siddheshwari campus. In the very beginning of the program, students and faculty members observed a minute’s silence for those who died in the Bailey Road tragedy.

In the opening address, Sheikh Nahid Neazy - associate professor and chair of the department - expressed his deep condolence for the family members of the departed souls (in Bailey Road blaze) and, later on, welcomed the newly admitted students (BA in English) to the university.

Dean of Arts and Social Sciences Professor Abdul Mannan and Registrar of the university Mr. Mohammad Abdul Matin were present as the guests of honour.

Professor Abdul Mannan shared the story of Abraham Lincoln (16th President of the United States) and advised the students to follow his mental firmness and confidence, while Mr. Abdul Matin, registrar of the university, wished the coming students a bright future.

The Department’s program coordinators (BA & MA) and some senior faculty members also gave their brief inspiring speeches and wished the students (Batch 82) good luck.

Some senior students of the department greeted the freshmen with flowers. A few of them also participated in the cultural part by reciting a poem of William Wordsworth and singing a Rabindra sangeet.

The program, enjoyed by all students, guests and faculty members, ended with an English song of Ed Sheeran and a couple of popular Bangla folk songs.
