Dhaka University commemorated Mourning Day on October 15 through various programs. Under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan, students, faculty, and staff participated in a rally and laid wreaths at the Jagannath Hall memorial.
To honor the day, black flags were raised at all halls and buildings, the university flag was flown at half-mast, and black badges were worn. Exhibitions featuring portraits and related items of the deceased were also held.
A discussion meeting was conducted in the October Memory Building, where the Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Niaz Ahmed Khan emphasized the importance of safety and responsibility to prevent a recurrence of the tragic incident that occurred on this date in 1985.
He said, ' Everyone should play a responsible role in preventing repeatation of a tragic accident's like October 15. The safety of the University's family members is the most important thing. Current administration is identifying risky buildings and initiatives will be taken to renovate these , he mentioned.
He also called for unity among people, highlighting that during the aftermath of the disaster, individuals came together regardless of their differences.
Prayers for the peace of the deceased were held at Jagannath Hall, with religious observances conducted by Hindu, Buddhist, and Christian communities.
Additionally, prayers were scheduled at all university mosques for the souls of those lost in the tragic event that claimed 40 lives.
It is noteworthy that every year this day is observed in memory of the deceased of the tragic incident occurred on October 15, 1985 at Jagannath Hall. In that accident 26 students, 14 guests and employees including a total of 40 people died and numerous students and guests were injured.
