Dhaka University, known as the "Oxford of the East," has recently fallen behind in university rankings. One of the contributing factor is the absence of a credit transfer system, which is available in both private universities and public University . This report seeks to explore why Dhaka University lacks such a system, attributing the issue primarily to administrative negligence, which has hindered the implementation of credit transfers at this century-old institution.
What is credit transfer
A university credit transfer is a process of transferring credits from one university to another. This can be done for a variety of reasons, such as changing universities, taking a break from studies, or completing a degree at a different university. The most relevant academic credit systems for international students are:
ECTS - European credits, Semester Credit Hours (SCH) and Quarter Credits - American credits.
University credit transfer can help students save time and money on their education. It can provide students with the opportunity to get a head start on their degrees. It can allow students to take courses that may not be offered at their home university. It can help students to get a feel for a different university environment. It can allow students to explore different academic areas and fields of study.

DU is lagging behind
In university rankings, credit transfer plays a significant role. According to the latest QS rankings, Dhaka University is positioned at 554th. Key indicators include a foreign student ratio of 1 and a foreign faculty ratio of 1.6. However, a student wishing to pursue higher education abroad must cancel their enrollment at DU, resulting in wasted time or missed opportunities.
Why DU can't
In response to the question of why Dhaka University cannot implement a credit transfer system, Dhaka university's Pro- VC ( Education) professor D. Mamun Ahmed stated, "The administration needs to consider the issue of credit transfer. If someone wants to transfer credits from the university to another institution or vice versa, they should be given opportunities without any obstacles. The university administration should establish a process regarding this matter."
Dhaka University does not allow credit transfers. In response to why this is the case, Dhmentioned that implementing such a rule requires navigating several procedures involving the Deans' Committee and Academic Council.
