The 5th convocation of Chattogram University (CU) is scheduled to be held at the end of this year. CU's Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Shireen Akhter, confirmed this on Tuesday, August 8th, during a noon press conference after inaugurating the Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall of the university.
Despite not having an allocation in the convocation sector's budget, Prof. Dr. Shireen Akhter emphasized the 5th convocation multiple times during the press conference.
Regarding the lack of a budget allocation for the convocation, Prof. Dr. Akhter explained that the university had not allocated funds for the convocation sector for several years. The budget will be determined once the convocation date is finalized, and the university has its own plans for how to allocate the funds. The convocation has not been considered for the past five years, but action will be taken as soon as the convocation date is confirmed.
It's worth noting that the university's budget for the financial year 2023-24 was approved on July 30th. A review of the budget reveals that no provisions have been made for the convocation. Additionally, the CU administration has not allocated any budget for the convocation over the last five years.
Earlier, after a gap of 23 months, the 'Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib' hall, constructed for Buddhist students from hills and plains studying at Chattogram University, was inaugurated on the occasion of Bangmata's 93rd birthday.
On Tuesday, August 8th, at 10 am, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shireen Akhtar inaugurated the hall. Vice Chancellor Prof. Benu Kumar Dey, Acting Registrar KM Noor Ahmed, and Provost Prof. Dr. Uditi Das were also present.
The Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall reserves 60 percent of its seats for Buddhist students and the remaining 40 percent for general students. Furthermore, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved Tk 35 crore for the hall's construction.
On September 28th, 2021, Education Minister Dr. Dipu Mani inaugurated the Bangmata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall. The hall can accommodate 312 female students and is currently under the supervision of Education and Research Prof. Dr. Uditi Das.
In addition, CU's Bangabandhu and Atish Dipankar halls are expected to open in December, according to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shireen Akhtar.
