Mime festival in Dhaka University starts tomorrow

Like every year, the 5th International Mime Festival-2024 will start on Wednesday (22 May) under the initiative of Dhaka University Mime Action (DUMA). The two-day festival, which will be held at the Teacher-Student Center (TSC) auditorium of the university, will conclude on May 23. A total of 12 mime teams from Bangladesh, India, Italy and South Korea will participate in this.

Former President of DUMA Shahriar Shaon said, ‘Gautam Saha and Pranabjoti Hiru from India, Paolo Avantani from Italy and Jang Hoon Lee from South Korea will participate in our festival this year.

Apart from this, the 8 teams from Bangladesh that will participate are - Dhaka University Mime Action, Dream Homes - Theater Dhaka, Jalchhabi Theater - Kishoreganj, Gollachoot Natyadal, Shruti Cultural Academy, The Mummers, Muktavihang, Mime Face - Narayanganj.

He said, ‘Every evening from 6:30 pm to 9:00 pm there will be a puppet show. The festival will begin on May 22nd with a rally at 4 pm and will end on May 23rd at 9 pm with the awarding of certificates and crests to mime artists of DUMA.’

He further said, ‘Every year in our festival we give away mementos for outstanding contribution in mime acting. This year the festival will honor German pantomime artist Milan Schnadek. Apart from the exhibition, the festival will also have mime workshops, seminars and competitions.’

Earlier on Monday (May 20) evening in a press conference organized at the office of Dhaka University Journalists Association, DUMA officially announced the festival.

Incidentally, Dhaka University Mime Action started it's journey on February 27, 2011 at TSC by Mir Lokman. So far, through more than 700 exhibitions, it has gained reputation at home and abroad. DUMA is working to introduce Bangladeshi Mime on different stages of the country as well as abroad.

Mousumi Mou of DUMA recently participated in the International Theater Festival held in Casablanca, Morocco and won the Best Female Award there.
