Former President Donald Trump on Monday (15 April) declared that there was "no case" shortly after entering a Manhattan courthouse to face 34 felony counts in the first ever criminal trial of a former US president.

"There is no case," Trump said in remarks to the press. "This is political persecution… It's an assault on America."

Trump also said that the United States is run by an incompetent man who is very much involved in the case.

"This is really an attack on a political opponent," Trump added.

Jury selection in the case will take place on Monday.

Trump has been charged with 34 felony counts of falsification of business records in order to conceal $130,000 paid to pornography star Stormy Daniels for her silence over their alleged sexual encounter.

The case is one of four criminal indictments against Trump amid his re-election campaign and may be the only one to go to trial before Election Day in November.

If convicted, Trump faces up to four years in prison.
