The death toll from the devastating floods in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul has risen to 56.

Another 74 people were injured and 67 people remain missing, the news channel said, adding that a total of 281 municipalities in the state have been affected so far.

On Friday (3 May), the G1 news portal reported that 39 people had been killed and at least 32,000 left without shelter as a result of the flooding.

Heavy rainfall in Brazil's southernmost state on the border with Uruguay started on Monday, with the forecast by the National Institute of Meteorology for parts of the Rio Grande do Sul territory remaining at red alert. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the region despite bad weather forecasts, his office said on Thursday.
