The death toll from floods in Kenya since March has risen to 228, Kenyan government spokesman Isaac Mwaura said on Sunday (5 May).

"We mourn the loss of 9 lives in the past 24 hours, including 7 adults and 2 children, bringing together the total flood-related death toll to 228, across the country," Mwaura said in a statement published on X.

The country's government offered its condolences to the friends and families of the victims, according to the statement.

On Saturday, the Kenyan Interior Ministry said that the floods across the country had killed 219 people, injured 164 and left another 72 missing since March.

In late March, AFP reported that heavy rains had flooded the streets in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, leaving at least 10 people dead. The East African nation has been reportedly suffering from incessant downpours in recent weeks, as El Nino weather phenomenon exacerbates seasonal rainfall.

On April 29, the Kenya Red Cross said that the floodwaters could originate from a nearby river that had burst its banks.
