At least 492 Palestinian health workers have been killed in the Gaza Strip since the start of hostilities on October 7, with 80% of primary health care centers no longer operating, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to health Tlaleng Mofokeng said.

"Data also reveals a grim reality: in Syria, for example, overall 25 attacks on health facilities took place in 2023 and as of March 2024 over 12.2 million people are in dire need of healthcare; between 7 October 2023 and 3 May 2024, 492 Palestinian health workers were reportedly killed in Gaza and 80 per cent of primary health care centres are not functional," Mofokeng said in a statement on Monday (6 May).

She also called for investigations into attacks on health facilities or health workers.

On October 7, 2023, Palestinian movement Hamas launched a large-scale rocket attack against Israel and breached the border, attacking both civilian neighborhoods and military bases. Nearly 1,200 people in Israel were killed and some 240 others abducted during the attack. Israel launched retaliatory strikes, ordered a complete blockade of Gaza, and started a ground incursion into the Palestinian enclave with the declared goal of eliminating Hamas fighters and rescuing the hostages. Over 34,700 people have been killed so far by Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local authorities. More than 100 hostages are still believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza.
