Israel has arbitrarily arrested a record 76 Palestinian journalists and media workers in the West Bank and Gaza since the October 7 Hamas attack, the International Federation of Journalists said on Wednesday (29 May).

"Seventy-six Palestinian journalists and media workers have been arrested by Israel’s security forces in the occupied West Bank and Gaza since the Hamas-led attack in southern Israel on 7 October, 2023," the IFJ said in a statement.

Of those, 50 are still in prison, including 20 who are subject to administrative detention, a procedure that allows the Israeli military to hold prisoners indefinitely and without charges, the IFJ said, citing data obtained by the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate.

"The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is alarmed by the record number of journalists arbitrarily arrested as part of Israel’s broader campaign to intimidate and deter them from reporting on the military occupation," it added.

The IFJ estimated that at least 102 Palestinian journalists and media workers had been killed since the outbreak of the war in Gaza. It urged Israel to halt its persecution of Palestinian journalists and demanded their immediate and unconditional release.
