BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and seven other party leaders and activists were acquitted on Wednesday by a lower court in an arson case filed at Paltan Police Station.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman acquitted the eight accused in the case.
His lawyer Joynal Abedin Mesbah said Mirza Fakhrul and Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, along with six other party leaders, were acquitted in the case.
The other convicts are: Jamaat's Dhaka South City unit Secretary Dr Muhammad Shafiqul Islam Masud, former Jubo Dal President Saiful Alam Nirob, BNP Information and Research Secretary Azizul Bari Helal, BNP leaders Moazzem Hossain Babu, Kazi Rezaul Haque Babu and Khandaker Enamul Haque Enam.
The lawyer said the court order came after a long 12 years since the case in connection with the torching of a garbage truck was filed with Paltan Police Station in 2012.
There were a total of nine accused in the case, but one of them passed away, leading to the acquittal of the remaining eight.
Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Detective Branch (DB) Police Sub-Inspector Anwar Hossain Khan, submitted the charge sheet to the court on October 23, 2017.
Later, on September 3 this year, the court framed charges against the accused.
