The much-anticipated 17-member roster for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023 has been revealed by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday (12 August). The selection committee's choices have led to the exclusion of seasoned allrounder Mahmudullah Riyad, while marking the entry of Tanzid Hasan Tamim into the squad for the very first time.
Tanzid, a proficient left-handed opener, emerged as Bangladesh's standout batsman during the recent ACC Emerging Asia Cup held in Sri Lanka. Notably, he notched up three fifties in a total of four matches, a performance that has earned him a spot on the national team. Furthermore, Tanzid showcased his prowess as a key contributor during Bangladesh's victory in the U-19 World Cup back in 2020.
In addition to the squad's new face, Nasum Ahmed, Mahedi Hasan, and Mohammad Naim have also secured their positions. Nasum Ahmed's absence from ODI action since the Ireland series at home is now set to change, and Mahedi Hasan, an adept right-handed allrounder, will return after his last ODI appearance in 2021 during the New Zealand tour.
This year's Asia Cup is slated to take place across various venues in Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tournament will feature a total of six participating teams, including Bangladesh.
