A three-day heatwave alert has been issued in Bangladesh as the scorching summer sends the mercury rise past 40C in parts of the country.

The heatwave may continue and intensify further over the next 72 hours commencing today, the Met Office said in an alert message on Friday (April 19).

“Due to increasing moisture incursion, the discomfort may increase,” the warning message by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said.

April has already experienced a severe heatwave, and the BMD says that there will be no immediate relief from this situation.

During a mild heatwave, the temperature remains between 36C and 37.9C. It ranges between 38C and 39.9C during a moderate heatwave. A severe heatwave sees the temperature rise from 40C to 41.9C. Any temperature beyond this point is considered a very severe heatwave.

The Met Office says the temperature may rise to 44C next month.

During heatwaves:

Drink more water

Wipe neck and face with wet cloths

Take rest in the shades whenever possible
