Shuchona becomes the first woman mayor of Cumilla

Dr. Tahseen Bahar Shuchona has been elected the first woman mayor of Cumilla City Corporation (CoCC). On Saturday (March 9) around 7:30 pm, she was declared elected after announcing the results of the mayoral by-election.

Returning Officer Farhad Hossain announced the by-election results at Comilla District School Auditorium.

In the announced results, Dr. Tahseen Bahar Shuchona got 48 thousand 890 votes with the election symbol Bus. Her closest rival, former mayor Monirul Haque Sakku with the election symbol Table Clock got 26 thousand 897 votes. Besides, Nizam Uddin Qaiser of horse symbol got 13 thousand 155 votes and Noor ur Rahman Mahmud Tanim of elephant symbol got 5 thousand 173 votes.
 
Dr. Tahsin Bahar Shuchona is the daughter of AKM Bahauddin Bahar, MP from Cumilla-6 Constituency and the Organizing Secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Awami League. She was the candidate for the city election for the first time.

The former mayor of CoCC, Mayor Arfanul Haque Rifat died while undergoing treatment at Singapore's Mount Elizabeth Hospital on December 13, 2023. The post of mayor was declared vacant by the EC. The Election Commission fixed the date of the vote for the post of Mayor of CoCC on March 9, 2024.

The total voters in Cumilla City are 2 lakh 42 thousand 458 people. Among them, there are 1 lakh 24 thousand 278 female voters, 1 lakh 18 thousand 182 male voters and 2 third gender voters. These voters exercised their right to vote in 105 centers of 27 wards of the city.
