A fire at the Kumargaon Power Plant in Sylhet has disrupted electricity supply to  parts of the city. The fire broke out around 9 am on Monday (15 April). Five units of the fire service rushed to the scene and managed to bring the fire under control after about an hour of effort. Talatala Fire Service and Civil Defense leader Shahidul Islam said, the fire was brought under control by 10 am.

Now, only smoke billowing out of the power plant, and there is no fear of any major accident, he added. Although there was no major damage in the fire incident, electricity supply has been suspended in some parts of Sylhet city.

According to the Power Division sources, the fire broke out in the abandoned air filter of the water treatment plant of the 225 megawatt power plant in Kumargaon.

Bangladesh Power Development Board Sylhet region chief engineer Mohammad Abdul Qadir said, the high-voltage wire of the 33 kV Golapganj Upazila supply line was snapped, sparking the fire, and then the fire spread to the air filter kept aside in the power center.

It will take several hours to restore power supply after assessing the damages, he said.

Moreover, electricity connection has been disrupted in five feeders under rural electrification board, out of which three have already been reconnected and the remaining two will be restored shortly, he added. Mayor of Sylhet City Corporation  Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury visited the power plant.

Allah has saved us from a major disaster. With the help of the firefighters and the assistance of the local people, the fire was brought under control. I will discuss with the authorities concerned to establish a fire service station near the power plant, the mayor told media during the visit.

A devastating fire broke out at this power plant  on November 17, 2020, which resulted in a 31-hour power outage in Sylhet city.
