7 to die for 2003 murder in Habiganj

A Habiganj court on Tuesday (30 April) sentenced seven people to death and 10 others to life in prison for killing a man in 2003.

Judge of the Habiganj Additional District and Session Judge-1, Azizul Haque handed down the punishment and fined them Tk one lakh each.

The condemned convicts are—Joynal Mia, Milon Ahmed, Abul Fazal, Kutub Uddin, Rafique Mia, Jakir Hossain and Abbas Uddin.

The lifers are—Sayed Ali, Mizaz Ali, Matlib Mia, Kutub Uddin, Abul Kalam, Ziaur Rahman, Ayat Ali, Isak Ali, Jodge Mia and Ibrahim.

According to the prosecution, Harun Ahmed, a businessman of Hurgaon village in Sadar upazila, was stabbed to death by the convicts when they, equipped with lethal weapons, attacked him on February 14, 2003.

Total 32 injury marks were found on the body of Harun.

Sumon Ahmed, brother of Harun, filed a case against 47 people with Sadar Police Station.

Police submitted chargesheet against them on August 18, 2003.

Of the chargesheeted accused, eight died during the trial proceedings of the case.

After examining records and witnesses, the court acquitted 22 accused as allegations brought against them could not be proved.
