Malaysia goes tough on vehicle operators for safety

Recently, the Malaysian administration has been working to implement proper use of Malaysia's internal safety laws. Especially JPJ Malaysia (The Road Transport Department, Malaysia) which is involved in road safety, has been working round the clock by blocking various roads.

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has issued more than 14,000 notices to foreigners for different traffic offenses after a nationwide special operation over the last 20 days.

JPJ senior enforcement director Datuk Lokman Zaman said that JPJ had issued a total of 14,527 notices of which mostly on them who has no valid licences. The notices were issues due to non-valid license (6268 cases), no insurance coverage (2667 cases), driving car after road tax expired (2657 cases) and other offense (1948 cases). He said he will not compromise to traffic offenders especially foreign traffic offenders. Because those who drive vehicles without a valid license are threat for others (road-crossers).

"They are threatening for us because they are not familiar with our traffic rules," he said on Sunday after taking part in a JPJ joint operation along Jalan Bangsar, a major road in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Lokman said, "A total of 100 personnel from his department along with the Police's Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department and also Immigration Department took part in the joint operation"

"On Sunday we checked a total of 1469 vehicles and issued a total of 443 notices for various offences which included no valid license (327), expired road tax (143), expired insurance (123), tinted windows (98), duplicate number plates (80), and technical offenses (36)."

A total of 34 foreigners were also caught for not having valid documents during the operation. Police also arrested two drunk drivers.

The main purpose of the operation was to promote compliance with the Act and Regulations under the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 333) and the rules thereunder, especially taking action against offenses that caused fatal accidents.

JPJ Federal Territory Director Mohammad Zaki Ismail also took part in the operation.

"We would like to remind commercial vehicle operators to adhere to the time-limit restrictions currently imposed on certain routes, as strict action will be taken against drivers who violate the restrictions."
