Former banker jailed for 26yrs in graft case

A Dhaka court on Monday (29 April) sentenced Musabbir Rahim, Assistant Vice President and Head of Card Division of City Bank, to 26 years imprisonment in a graft case for allegedly embezzling 2.50 crore taka between November 2015- April 2016.

Judge Syed Arafat Hossain of the Dhaka Special Judge Court-4 handed down the verdict and issued an arrest warrant against him as he is absconding.

In addition to 26 years imprisonment in four separate clauses of the Penal Code, 1860, the convict was also fined Taka 1.60 lakh, and 2 years more behind the bars in total, in default of payment.

According to the case, from November 25, 2015 to April 24, 2016, more than Taka 2.5 crore was stolen from City Bank and its customers through forgery.

On August 18, 2016, the vice president of the legal division of the bank's head office, AKM Ayub Ullah filed a case with city's Banani police station. 

On December 31, 2017, ACC Assistant Director Monirul Islam pressed charge sheet against Musabbir.

On August 25, 2019, the trial began. During the trial, 17 of the 21 witnesses testified.
