New York State Supreme Court judge Juan Merchan ordered former US President Donald Trump to pay $9,000 in fines for violating a gag order in the so-called hush money case.

Merchan fined Trump $1,000 for each of nine violations of the gag order, which prohibited him from publicly speaking about potential jurors and witnesses in the case.

Merchan could have jailed Trump for up to 30 days under state law, although prosecutors did not request jail time for the gag order violations.

Trump has characterized the court case as an attempt at election interference amid the 2024 US presidential race.
